Now currently reading ‘The Fifth Season’ by N.K. Jemisin, and I must say that she is a very good writer.

She knows how to keep conflict and tension building. One part I thought was a bit slow but then ended on a tense moment.

She also puts in a lot of foreshadowing and teasers relating to her next novel in the series ‘The Obelisk Gate’.

(Love Dystopian Novels? Here’s three more you must read!)

I can’t count how many times I keep hearing of giant floating gray obelisks in the sky. Especially how they start getting closer or turning, or might be where the protagonist was pointing her head when a tense moment came.

It’s a big secret and just from the title of the second book it makes you want to keep reading until you get to the second book in order to see what the obelisks are all about.

Also another secret seems to be the rock creatures who can take many different forms including humans. The small boy is a rock creature or what is he? Is he the enemy or an ally? Many great questions and things that hook the reader to read more.

Also, in particular it’s put into three different viewpoints. One is in second person as you yourself are going through the action (possibly the main protagonist). The second is in third person perhaps omniscient from the viewpoint of a girl training at the falcrum (4th ring level). The third is also in third person possibly omniscient from the viewpoint of a small girl who was taken from her family to be raise at the falcrum (as a grit).

These three interlocking narratives move through the world and take you deeper into the mysteries. They each guide you to understand the world in which they are in and compliment each other.

There’s a little bit relating to sex and copulation but not too much that you are turned off. Of course that’s one topic that is not taboo now but kind of a forbidden apple. So of course it keep the tension and interest levels high.

Gonna keep reading and seeing what other tricks I can see working beneath the hood.

Peace!
